Larry Black's Report:
(Photos are available on the
Photos page or
Search Photos page.)
The age group Triathlon World Championships were held here yesteday in Lausanne
There were just under 100 men in my age group, 45-49. Our heat started at 1:10 in the afternoon.
The weather was good, on the cool side, water temperature 62 degrees. I had a really outstanding swim,
placing first. The bike was a bit terrifying. It was very "technical", with steep downhills, sharp turns,
sections of cobblestones. We did four laps of the course and the first time through I had a death grip on
both brakes. There were a bunch of crashes and a couple guys from Team USA ended up in the hospital. I got
more comfortable as the laps progressed. My split was 1 hour 11 minutes, placing me 44th in the age group.
The run was flat, four loops lined with cheering spectators. I ran 38:20 for the 10K which was the 7th fastest
run in the age group. My overall finish in the age group was 12th. I'm very satisfied with the result,
especially given the difficulty and steep nature of the bike course which really puts flat-land floridians
at a major disadvantage. We had a Team USA party at the Beua Rivage Hotel last night after the race. This
morning we slept in, I disassembled and packed the bike. Later we went down and watched the pro race. The
highest finishing american was Hunter Kemper of Orlando in 7th place. Tomorrow morning we check out and catch
the bus for Geneva airport at 4:30am. Our flight leaves at 7:45 to London. We transfer and go to Miami, then
on to Ft Myers, arriving 6 pm Monday evening local time. This has been a really wonderful experience, one
of the most exciting of my athletic career. I'll never forget the 25 mile training ride I did Friday morning
north-east along the Lake Geneva shoreline. A perfect sunny day with snow capped Alpine mountain tops in the
background along terraced cliffs with vineyards and beautiful old chateau houses. Wow. See you back in
Fort Myers, happy training.

Larry Black is now an age-group World Aquathlon Champion. His report is below.
Photos are available on the
Photos page or
Search Photos page.
We arrived in Lausanne after a weather delayed 27 hours of traveling,
having missed our London Heathrow connection in Chicago and consequently the
connection to Geneva. Almost miraculously, our luggage and the bike case
arrived with us. The weather was terrible with air temp of 50, cloudy, windy,
rainy but this afternoon it turned nice, sunny and warm. The water temp today
for the swim in Lake Geneva was 65.
The aquathlon was held today at 3pm local time. The venue and race
organization is really nice, ultra professional, looks just like an olympic
course. Music, announcements in English and French make for an ambiance like no
other. The streets at the transition area are all carpeted so you don't step on
any rocks. We had an in-water start for the aquathlon along a carpeted pier
with marked race positions. The race was wet-suit legal so it was changed to
1000m swim followed by 5K run. I had an OK swim but the cold water slowed me
down. My run was 17:29 which I was happy with considering the large hill we had
to run up twice. I won my age group so I guess I'm a world age group aquathlon
champion now. Final time was 31:44.
We watched Sara McLarty win the womens pro race. She got a huge lead on
the swim which couldn't be overcome on the run. They raised the stars and
stripes for her and played the national anthem. Very cool.
Now I have two days to relax, get my bike re-assembled and prepare for the
triathlon on Saturday. I'm riding the bike course tomorrow. It's a tough
course with long climbs and technical descents and corners so I need to see it a
couple of times before the race. Tomorrow is also busy with pre-race meeting at
2:30pm and Team USA meeting at 3ish, followed by the parade of nations at 5:30
and then pasta party/dinner later.
I hope everyone is well with minimal effects from the hurricane.

Larry Black finished off a weekend of racing by winning the Englewood Triathlon. Amazingly, he won the event
after winning the masters division in the Fast Cat 5K the previous day! Triathlon cognoscenti are well aware
of Larry's exploits. His performances include a win at Naples in 2005 and a fifth in his age group at
nationals in July, 2006. Someone forgot to tell this dude he's a masters athlete.

June 12, 2006 - Attention all runners and athletes
The 3 D Running Club has decided to branch out and become a viable club involved not only in training and group
runs but also in helping organize and time area races. In order to become a more viable organization we have
joined the RRCA as a member club and are looking into USATF membership. We currently have a start up list of
officers and a basic package of clock and timer to time road races. Henceforth, we will be known as the
"3D Runshoppe Road Runners Club." We are also going to begin the painful process of collecting dues and having
newsletters and upgrade the website to include more information about area runs and races. We currently will get
discounts at the Run Shoppe and at Snydermans and will work on more in the future. If you have any questions
you can contact Al JJ Delago at 267-0532 norse57@earthlink.net, Jeff Sommer at 768-2925 coachsommer@yahoo.com
or Rachel at The Run Shoppe 540-9529 runshoprachel@hotmail.com We are currently assigned to time the upcoming
Fast Cat 5K at Estero, the Knights of Fright in San Carlos Park and the Hearts and Park 5K at the new community
park. We will be looking for volunteers to help at the races in different capacities. We are not trying to take
FMTC races nor are we wanting to time races every weekend. We are looking to help out with the ever growing need
for race "officials" and will continue to race as many races as possible. Current yearly dues will be set at
Adults $15.00, children under 18 $5.00 or a family membership at $25.00. A membership application is available
on the main menu for this Web site; this application will also be sent out soon to all current email recipients
and we will go from there. Any questions please feel free to call, any complaints call Coach Sommer or Patty
Jones. Also remember that Bona Jones will be going to North Carolina this coming week to compete in the National
Track and Field Competition and wish her luck.

Well Bona got second in the mile in the state competition with a 4:58 not sure what the winning time was, a
little slower than Bona's regional time, then she came back and won the state championship in the 2 mile.
Not bad for someone who had a 103 degree temperature on Wednesday. Wish we all could have a bit of her
determination and heart. Anyhow just to let you all know how she did.

March 25, 2006 - Bona Breaks 27-Year-Old Record
Bona Jones continues to amaze. On Saturday, March 25th Bona broke the Florida high school girls 5000 Meters
track record by running 16:42. Bona was competing in an invitational collegiate track meet at her future
university, North Carolina State. The previous record held for 27 years and was set in 1979 when
Betty Jo Springs ran 16:45.6. In this weekend's race, Bona finished 4th overall.
Bona is a 3D member and the Florida Girls 2005 State Cross Country Champion. Bona is still in her senior year
high school track season.
